Wifi-Radar
Check and verify WiFi speed and availability on a community map with blockchain-verified locations
Problem Statement
WiFi-Radar is a decentralized, "public good" platform that revolutionizes how we discover internet access. It addresses the two most critical problems plaguing traditional WiFi mapping services: trust and data freshness. Standard maps are often cluttered with outdated information or fake listings, leading to frustrated users. WiFi-Radar solves this by building a transparent, community-driven ecosystem where every hotspot is cryptographically verified and stored permanently on decentralized infrastructure. The platform enables users to discover and contribute WiFi hotspot data through an intuitive map interface. Unlike other apps, WiFi-Radar implements a "Proof of Location" system. When a user adds a WiFi station, the system automatically performs real-time speed tests and verifies that the user is physically present at the claimed coordinates. This prevents location imitation , ensuring no one can claim to be at the airport while actually sitting at home.
Solution
WiFi-Radar takes a tech-first approach to balance Web3 security with Web2-grade usability. The frontend runs on a modern React stack (Next.js with Tailwind CSS), but the real value comes from how the decentralized components fit together to minimize friction while maximizing trust.Great onboarding experience with Coinbase Developer PlatformTo remove the “crypto barrier,” users sign in using familiar methods like Google, Apple, or SMS, which silently create a smart wallet in the background - no seed phrases, browser extensions, or prior Web3 knowledge required. Gas fees are sponsored via a paymaster, so contributors can start submitting WiFi measurements immediately without buying ETH or onramping funds.Verification logic with Chainlink Functions Workflows Trust in the data is enforced by a verification workflow that connects smart contracts to off-chain APIs. Submitted speed tests and GPS coordinates are cross-checked against IP-based geolocation, and only entries that pass this proof-of-location check are written on-chain, making it difficult to spoof locations or fake hotspots.Permanent storage via Filecoin Onchain Cloud Rich metadata such as hotspot names, coordinates, and speed history is anchored to Filecoin using Filecoin Pin, providing decentralized, censorship-resistant storage that is affordable at scale. Each dataset is referenced on Base by a content identifier (CID), keeping on-chain data lean while ensuring the underlying records are durable and independently verifiable.Efficient querying on Base Smart contracts are deployed on Base for low-cost, high-throughput interactions, and emitted events form the canonical registry of verified WiFi locations. The app consumes these events to power the wifi spots live map and contributor leaderboards, keeping the user experience fast while preserving fully on-chain transparency.
